Several of my friends have had the experience of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's -- and how often having something to do with their hands calmed them down... remember Grandma Fern doing her word searches while she was able, much happier than just sitting there...
There is a concept of a "Figit quilt" -- a small lap-size quilt with different textures and things to rub or move or tie... so when a granddaughter in the quilt guild decided she wanted to collect a lot of them for local care facilities, i decided i could help with that!!!
it's got a spool, a square of minky, a zipper pull, an eye-glass cleaner, a snap strip, elastic, shoestrings, and then random bits of fabric sewn in ways that there are more textures to feel... edged in a velvet-type fabric and backed/bound in flowers...
it made me smile and hope that it gets happily used
My sewing for the beginning stages of life is also tender. My friends Rich and Lucy have a firstborn son with cerebral palsy, among other difficulties. Theo is such a trouper! His difficult birth hasn't seemed to dim his spirits a bit. A little bit ago, Lucy posted on her next angst... Theo is getting too large for the changing tables in the restrooms... euw!!! She was dreading putting him on the grody floor, and i can't blame her!
SO, after chatting with her on Facebook for a while, i'm prepared to send her some vinyl-backed pads (plaid/star backing is what is used for tablecloths, and is washable)... total guess on the sizes and not sure how fast he will grow... but figure if she doesn't use/need, she can pass along to someone else :D
